Tree-Mendus Fruit's
International Cherry Pit-Spitting Championship
42nd Annual Pit Spit Results

Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm, EAU CLAIRE, MI (July 4, 2015).Persistence paid off for Kevin Bartz, 48, of Niles, the 42 nd Champion of the International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship held here annually. A familiar face on the official Championship cherry pit spitting court, he just never quite took top honors, until today, when his pit sailed, rolled and came to rest at 48’ 8” to beat Brian “Young Gun” Krause, 37, of Lansing, MI by 8 inches. “Young Gun” Krause was the 2014 International Champion and holds the Guinness Book of Records longest cherry pit spit with a distance of 93’ 6-1/2” set in 2003.

Bartz is the son of the 1977 Champion, Richard Bartz, and father to Zach Bartz, 10, the Youth 9-12 division winner. His children have dominated the youth divisions for many years. His daughter, Chloe, 14, was the 2014 Women’s Division winner, but unable to return to defend her title this year.

As fate would have it, however, the Women’s competition winner, Megan Ankrapp, 15, of Buchanan, spat 49’ ¼”, a distance of 4-1/4” further than Mr. Bartz. Bartz commented that if his daughter, Chloe, had been there, he would have been out-distanced by two teen-age, young ladies!

The afternoon Championship contest takes the top ten spitters from the morning Qualification Round. After the Qualification Round closes at noon, contestants with the top ten distances fill the ten Championship slots. Megan’s morning qualification spit of 30’ 2” fell short of qualifying for the Championship division.

The Qualification Round, from 10-Noon, was highly competitive as spitters were neck-in-neck in spitting distances this year. At one point shortly before noon, three contestants age 12-13 were among the top ten spitters by distance. Jack “the Jackel” Cook, 12, Naperville, IL, was the lone youth to qualify for the Championship with a qualifying spit of 42’. His Championship Round official distance was 26’ 6”.
Hope Hester, Coloma, won the 5 and Under youth division with a spit-acular 9’7” cherry pit spit, and Josh Hester, 8, spat 22’ 2” for the win in the 6-8 year old contest. Graham Schadt, Arlington, TX, won the Dignitary Division with a spit of 21’ 3”.
Rick “Pellet Gun” Krause, a 15 time Championship winner, was not present. Brian “Young Gun” Krause is a 10-time International Champion.

Berrien County Trial Court Judges John Donahue and Sterling Schrock served as Official Timekeeper and Line Judge, respectively. Jim Tipton, of Tipton Construction, was the Height Measurement Judge. Leona Foster, Ann Arbor, MI and Gabe Foster, Berrien Springs, MI were Distance Judges and Pit Sweeper, respectively. Mary Ankrapp, Buchanan, MI, and Lynne Sage, Morrice, MI, were Spit-by-Spit Announcer and Host. Nancy Tipton coordinated the event preparation.
