40th Annual Pit Spit Results

Headwind and humidity major factors in shorter than normal distances.

EAU CLAIRE, MI (July 6, 2013). Cherry pits flew with a slight drag today as an outstanding 140 contestants participated in the 40th International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm, Eau Claire MI.

When all had landed, Matt “BB Gun” Krause, 30 of Dimondale MI, gained his first title as International Champion. His spit of 41’ 6.5” was among the shortest winning distances in the 40-year history of the international event.  Matt is no foreigner to cherry pit spitting. He was the 1994 and 1995 Youth ( 12-&-under)  winner. He is also the youngest son of 15-time winner Rick “Pellet Gun” Krause, Tuba City AZ, and brother to Guinness World Record holder and 9-time winner Brian “Young Gun” Krause.  Mark Yelo, age 42, Oswego IL, took second place with a spit of 40’ 3”, and Tom Westgate, 68, Berrien Center MI, took third with a spit of 36’ 10.5”.

The top spit of the day, however, was 44’ 8” propelled by “Gentleman” Joe Lessard, Sr. of Blenheim, ON during the Dignitary Spit earlier in the afternoon. Eau Claire Mayor Dave Kurtz took second in the Dignitary’s event with a 20’ 8” spit.

In the Women’s Division, Amanda Jennings, 23, Point Edward ON, placed first, with a 32’ 11.5” distance. Amanda also qualified for the Championship category in which she sent a pit 27’ 7”.  Youth winners were a repeat of 2011 and 2012 with Chloe Bartz, Niles, MI, taking the Age 9-12 division (40’ 10”), and brother, Zach Bartz (26’ 5”) the Age 6-8 division.   Increasing wind and humidity played a part in reduced pit distances for participants in the later part of the competition.

Berrien County Trial Court Judges John Donahue and Sterling Schrock, and Eau Claire Mayor Dave Kurtz served as Official Timekeeper, Line Judge and Measurement Judge, respectively.

The 41st International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship will be July 5, 2014 at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm, Eau Claire, MI.
